My Way Is Better. What Now?
How should I respond when my students choose their own way over God’s way?
Suppose you had to drive from Maine to California and you wanted to avoid major traffic, tolls, and use the most efficient route. Would you use a GPS or would you think making your own way was better? Most would choose a GPS. Your student's life is like a road trip. What “traffic and tolls” do they want to avoid? How can we help them see God’s ways are better for their lives when they are choosing their own?
Remind them that better directions and choices come from a bigger picture.
God and His Word are like a GPS for life. Proverbs 3:5-6 give us a good example:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart - Just like a GPS, God understands all the options for the paths of your life and always suggests the right course. Trusting in the Lord means trusting that His ways are greater than our ways.
Don’t lean on your own understanding - Just because you don’t see the slowed traffic or accidents ahead doesn’t mean they’re not there. We don't know everything, so leaning on our own understanding can lead to some unhealthy consequences.
Acknowledge Him with all your ways - It’s important to follow all God’s instructions, even in the little things. Rerouting after leaving the path usually comes with a cost.
He will direct your paths - Turn by turn instructions may not give you the big picture, but they’ll keep you from "wrong turn" regrets. Try asking God about the next step versus the whole picture.
What are your thoughts?
